Enhancing Your Usage of Microsoft Dynamics CRM: XRM ToolBox

The XRM ToolBox (http://xrmtoolbox.codeplex.com/) is a free third party application that provides several pieces of functionality that Microsoft Dynamics CRM administrators wish were native to the application. All that needs to be done to use the application is to install it on any machine, point it at a CRM organization, and enter the appropriate credentials. It contains the tools listed below and below I’ll elaborate on two of the ones that I use most often.

  • Access Checker checks the access rights a specific user has for a specific record
  • Assembly Recovery Tool exports plugins and custom workflow activity assemblies
  • Attribute Bulk Updater updates “Searchable” and “Auditing” properties of multiple fields
  • Audit Center updates audit settings for the organization and its entities
  • Easy Translator exports and imports translations with contextual information
  • FetchXML Tester tests your FetchXML queries
  • Form Libraries Manager adds/removes JavaScript libraries to multiple forms
  • Form Parameter Manager adds/removes parameters from CRM forms
  • Iconator manages the icons of custom entities
  • Import/Export NN Relationships imports/exports many to many (N:N) relationships
  • Metadata Document Generator generates Excel and Word documents with entities and attribute information
  • Privileges Discovery finds roles that implement specific privileges
  • Role Updater updates multiple roles with the same privileges
  • Script Finder lists all events defined in the organization
  • SiteMap Editor manages the SiteMap (navigation bar at the top of CRM 2013 or on the left of CRM 2011)
  • Solution Components Mover transfers solution components from one solution to another one
  • Solution Import imports a solution archive or extracted folder
  • Solution Transfer Tool transfers a solution from a source organization to a target organization
  • Sync Filter Manager manages the filters for offline, Outlook, and server side synchronizations
  • Synchronous Events Execution Order Editor manages the execution order of synchronous events (workflows and plugins)
  • View Layout Replicator applies same layout to multiple views of the same entity
  • View Transfer Tool transfers entity views across multiple organizations
  • Web Resources Manager manages web resources (e.g., JavaScripts, images)

Metadata Document Generator

This application generates an Excel or Word document that contains attribute information for all the entities that you select with just a few clicks. It is a time saver when it comes to creating system design reference guides, taking a snapshot for historical purposes, or reviewing attribute information with others on a single screen.

SiteMap Editor

This application edits the navigation bar at the top of CRM 2013 or on the left of CRM 2011. The default navigation setup rarely fits the exact needs of a client and cannot be edited out of the box. After making the appropriate changes and updating the SiteMap, it will create a SiteMap solution in the organization. The SiteMap can be found under “Client Extensions” in the solution and can be added to other solutions and imported to other organizations (e.g., from Development to Production).
