In today’s fast-paced, competitive business world, companies are putting a lot of attention towards attracting and retaining top talent. Many companies advertise a culturally diverse, “fun and friendly workplace” and claim to provide an ideal balance between work and play. While these measures can go far in attracting new talent, often what keeps employees engaged is empowerment, autonomy, and purpose.
How then is West Monroe Partners different than most other companies out there? West Monroe Partners has successfully built a mentorship program that starts with the first day on the job. Each new employee is matched up with a mentor, or what we call a coach. This matching is very different from your career advisor or manager role in that the coach is there to provide daily guidance and training in a more informal way as you transition to your new role at West Monroe. The coach/coachee relationship is highly customized and can be tailored however the two see fit to supplement the relationship with the employee’s career advisor and team leadership. In my opinion, an effective coach or mentor must possess a strong H.E.A.R.T to make the most out of this critical relationship:
- Honors Commitments
- Earns trust
- Teaches unselfishly
The role of the coach at West Monroe is to provide career guidance and interpretation of feedback, communicate West Monroe Partners initiatives and changes, provide opportunities in professional development, and assist with acclimatization into the company norms and culture. Our coaching program provides new employees with a solid footing within West Monroe Partners, successfully preparing the coachee for career advancement. A coach also offers support by providing advice on work-related manners and acting as an advocate and role model to the employee. This program helps to develop confidence and competence, and can contribute to an individual’s successful career for both parties.
Through the coaching program, employees know they have a committed sounding board, a place to get feedback in an informal setting and dedicated support as they forge a path at West Monroe. This program contributes to our high levels of engagement and low attrition rates compared to industry averages.
