If you keep up on technology news, you have likely heard of a product called Xamarin. Xamarin is a powerful mobile application development framework that allows you to develop fully native, cross-platform mobile applications using C# and Microsoft.NET. As Xamarin has been rapidly gaining traction, they’ve rolled out “Xamarin University” to enable training and certification of Xamarin developers.
Xamarin created a unique process for certifying developers. Before you can take the certification test, you must complete the required classes through Xamarin University. Some classes are optional, and Xamarin is constantly adding new courses and improving existing ones. Do not fear, your location will not prevent you from attending these classes – they are all held online through GoToMeeting.
After you pay the yearly subscription fee, you have access to all of the courses offered by Xamarin and can take each one as many times as you want or need. You also have access to all of the course instructors via email as well as scheduled office hours. You can take the classes at your own pace and on your own schedule and you don’t have to know anything about Xamarin, iOS, or Android to get started. The courses range from “Intro to Mobile” to “Advanced Cross-Platform Development”. GoToMeeting is great for online courses because it allows for very easy communication between students and teachers.
Xamarin University is beneficial to developers of any experience level because you get to learn through hands-on exercises with very advanced trainers who know the Xamarin, iOS, and Android inside and out. Plus, getting a development certification is always beneficial to your career!
Here are a few topics that are covered in Xamarin University:
- iOS Development
- Android Development
- Cross-platform Development (Code-sharing techniques)
- UI design/implementation
- Navigation Patterns
- Memory Management
- Mobile Data and SQLite
- Publishing mobile apps
After completing the required Xamarin classes, you will be eligible to take the Xamarin Certification. The certification test is loaded with 150 questions about Android, iOS, and Cross-platform development and you have 3 hours to complete it. I recently took the required Xamarin University classes and passed the certification exam and I feel as though I have gained a lot from the courses and am able to contribute significantly to our Mobility Practice at West Monroe Partners. I will continue to take the extra courses added by Xamarin over the next year and I look forward to seeing the course list grow and the teaching methods evolve.
